Travel options from Oslo to Sweden’s third-biggest city will improve this summer with the launch of a new train route. Here’s the full details.

Norwegian train operator Vy is to establish a direct train route from Oslo Central Station to Malmö, Sweden. The summer route will operate as a trial during the period 14 July to 11 August this year.

The trains will run as extensions of the current Oslo–Gothenburg services. Tickets go on sale from mid-April.

Positive for Connections

The new direct service would make connections to Copenhagen and Hamburg easier from Oslo during the short summer season the route will be operational.

It will also be useful for residents of Malmö and Copenhagen wanting to take a summer trip to Trondheim or Bergen by train, for example.

Introducing Malmö

Located just across the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen, Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city, offering a mix of Scandinavian design, green spaces, and a thriving food scene.

The city’s iconic Turning Torso skyscraper dominates the skyline, symbolising Malmö’s innovative spirit. At the same time, its historic old town, Gamla Staden, features charming cobbled streets and centuries-old buildings surrounding the picturesque Lilla Torg square.

Known for its sustainability efforts, Malmö boasts numerous parks, including the sprawling Kungsparken and the revitalised Västra Hamnen waterfront area. The city is also home to several museums, such as the Malmöhus Castle, which houses exhibits on local history and art.

With the launch of a new direct train service from Oslo, Malmö is now more accessible than ever, offering travellers a unique Scandinavian city break just a few hours away.

Growing Interest in Train Travel

Vy’s Erik Røhne said that interest in train travel in Scandinavia is growing: “In 2023, we doubled the number of departures between Oslo and Gothenburg,” adding that the route saw strong growth in 2024.

But Vy has bigger ambitions, according to Røhne. He said that it’s “natural” to use the strength they have from operating in both Norway and Sweden.

“We believe that this summer train will be popular, as it makes environmentally friendly travel to Europe easier,” he said.

All Eyes on Copenhagen

The announcement also contained a tantalising hint about the long-awaited return of an Oslo to Copenhagen train service. Røhne said that Vy will announce more details later in the year.

Norway’s parliament recently pledged to reintroduce a night rail service from Norway to mainland Europe by 2030. Trains between Oslo and Copenhagen used to run regularly but were stopped in the year 2000.

Following recent improvements in Europe’s night train network, an Oslo to Copenhagen overnight train would open up easier travel to many European destinations from the Norwegian capital city.
