As one of the fjord region's most popular ports for cruise ships, Olden has become a must-visit destination for travellers seeking to immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of the country.

In 2023, more than 360,000 passenger visits were recorded across 132 cruise ship arrivals. The deep water of the Nordfjord allows Olden to accommodate multiple cruise ships on the same day.

Despite its small size, Olden is packed with opportunities for adventure, making it the perfect place to experience the best of Norway in just one day. Whether you arrive by cruise or independently, Olden and its neighbouring village of Loen offer a wealth of sights and activities to explore.

Whether you’re drawn to the natural wonder of the nearby glacier, relaxing on the serene shores of Lake Loen, or enjoying the panoramic vista from Mount Hoven, Olden and its surroundings promise a day full of memorable experiences.

A Quick Introduction to Olden

Located at the innermost end of the stunning Nordfjord in western Norway, Olden is a small village with a population of just over 500 residents. Despite its modest size, Olden boasts a rich history, dating back to Viking times.

The village has long been a hub for agriculture and fishing, but in recent years, it has gained popularity as a gateway to some of Norway's most spectacular natural wonders.

With its picturesque setting surrounded by towering mountains, lush valleys, and nearby glaciers, Olden offers a unique glimpse into Norway's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Now, let's take a look at some of the most popular things to do in Olden and its surrounding region.

1. Walk to Briksdal Glacier

Norway’s glaciers are rapidly receding, so don’t miss the chance to visit Briksdal Glacier, an accessible arm of the Jostedal Glacier, mainland Europe’s largest. Though now much smaller, Briksdal Glacier reached the lake’s shoreline just 15 years ago.

The walk to the glacier through Briksdalen Valley is equally impressive, with lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and stunning photo opportunities.

Regular shuttle buses from Olden take you close, with a scenic 1.5-mile trail leading to the glacier viewpoint. Alternatively, book an independent shore excursion in advance.

2. Take the Glacier ‘Troll Car'

As an alternative to the walk, a limited number of ‘troll cars’ are available. These are a modern replacement for the historic horse and carriage that traditionally took tourists to the glacier.

Book in advance to secure your place, but remember, you'll still need to take the shuttle from Olden to the trailhead.

3. Ride the Loen Skylift

“Breathtaking” perfectly describes the view from Mount Hoven on a clear day. From the top, you can see the mirror-like Lake Lovatnet, the charming villages of Loen and Olden, the Nordfjord, and even the Briksdal Glacier.

Once accessible only to serious hikers, the Loen Skylift, introduced in 2017, now offers a six-minute ride to over 3,300 feet above sea level. The steep cable car provides access to viewpoints, hiking trails, and sculptures at the summit.

Though the cost is high—around NOK 595, or NOK 900 including the return shuttle bus from Olden—the experience is well worth it on a clear day.

4. Tackle the ‘Via Ferrata'

Loen's Mount Hoven is the perfect basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts. For hikers, there are numerous trails suited to all abilities, from gentle paths to more challenging routes that test even the most seasoned adventurers.

One of the most exhilarating options is the via ferrata, a challenging route that attracts experienced hikers looking for an unforgettable experience.

This thrilling climb involves navigating steep rock faces using a series of fixed ladders, cables, and bridges, with the most recent addition—a 45-degree rope ladder—adding a new level of excitement to the journey.

For those seeking extra support, guided hikes are available, providing all necessary equipment and expert guidance. In fact, only hikers with prior via ferrata experience are permitted to tackle the route without a guide. Safety first.

5. Explore the Churches of Olden Village

If you prefer a more leisurely pace, a stroll around Olden village offers a perfect way to connect with Norwegian nature.

A short walk from the cruise port along the river leads you to the village centre, where you can explore the contrasting wooden churches: the deep red Olden New Church (1934) and the bright white Olden Old Church, both iconic landmarks.

For a peaceful extension of your walk, continue down the valley to Laukifossen Waterfall and Floen Lake, enjoying the serene beauty of the area.

6. Hike to the Videseter Waterfall

Embarking on a hike to Videseter waterfall is a great choice for nature lovers visiting Olden. This stunning cascade, nestled deep within the mountains, offers an invigorating journey through some of Norway's most pristine landscapes.

The trail to Videseter is moderately challenging, making it accessible to most hikers while still providing a rewarding experience for seasoned adventurers.

The waterfall itself is a majestic sight, with water tumbling down steep cliffs into a serene pool at the base, creating a tranquil atmosphere perfect for relaxation and reflection.

The hike is also a photographer's dream, with numerous spots along the way to capture the dramatic scenery.

7. Visit the Magnificent Loen Lake

Explore the scenic Loen Valley, home to the tranquil Lake Loen and picturesque hiking trails that lead to views of waterfalls and lush landscapes.

Learn about the tragic history of the lake by visiting the memorials commemorating the early 20th-century landslides, which created devastating tidal waves in the lake. The site offers a sobering yet fascinating glimpse into the region's natural history.

8. Discover Industrial Heritage at Innvik

If you're looking for something different during a cruise port call in Olden, consider visiting the old wool mill in nearby Innvik.

Established in 1890, this factory is one of the largest remaining wooden industrial buildings in Northern Europe and played a crucial role in Nordfjord’s history.

Powered by hydroelectricity, it produced woolen goods like suits, blankets, and upholstery until 1972 and was a major local employer, especially for women.

The independent excursion operated by Olden Adventure includes a guided walk through the factory, an exhibition of original machinery, and a film about life at the factory and village.

9. See the Nordfjord by Kayak

Get much more up close and personal with the stunning environment of the Nordfjord from the water-level vantage point of a kayak.

Loen Active offers two-hour and three-hour guided kayak tours on the Nordfjord, the latter of which includes a lot of information from your guide about the history of the area. The shorter tour is ideal for beginners.

Experienced kayakers can also rent kayaks and all necessary safety equipment for use on the fjord. However, you'll need to present a personal certificate for either NPF (WetCard 16 hours), EPP2 or BCU 2STAR.

10. Stay at Singerheimen House

Not visiting Olden on a cruise? Spend the night to appreciate the best of Olden without the crowds. Experience a night at the historic Singerheimen House, the former summer residence of American artist and billionaire W.H. Singer Jr.

Perched on a hilltop in Olden, this charming retreat offers a glimpse into the past, where you can relax in the lounge, surrounded by original art and furnishings. Wake up to the aroma of freshly baked bread and enjoy breakfast on the veranda.

While the house retains its authentic charm with shared bathrooms and single beds, it provides a unique and tranquil escape, just a short distance from Olden’s main attractions.
