Commuters and visitors in Norway's capital city can look forward to major upgrades to the T-Bane (metro) network, but will face big disruption first as the work takes place.

Major upgrades to the Oslo metro network are set to take place throughout 2025, impacting multiple lines and stations, including significant work at Majorstuen station.

The Oslo Metro is the city’s fastest travel option and the backbone of Oslo's public transport system, which also includes trains, trams, buses and ferries.

With five lines and frequent departures, the metro serves 111 million passengers annually across Oslo and Bærum.

Essential Upgrades for a Future-Proof Network

The planned improvements aim to modernise the metro system, making it more robust, efficient, and future-ready.

Ruter, Oslo's public transport authority, has confirmed that substitute bus services will operate in affected areas during the disruptions.

The works include:

Majorstuen Station Upgrade: Expanded platforms, new entrances, and a pedestrian bridge to enhance passenger flow.

Fornebubanen Connection: Integrating the upcoming Fornebu line into the existing network.

Signal System Overhaul: Installation of a modern CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) system to improve capacity and reliability.

“These upgrades are necessary to ensure a better metro service for Oslo in the years ahead,” said Snorre Lægran, Planning Director at Ruter. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause and are committed to providing strong alternative transport options.”

The most extensive disruption will occur between Borgen and Majorstuen stations, where buses will replace metro services from late March until early November.

Additionally, Majorstuen station will close entirely during several periods, particularly in the summer months when passenger numbers are lower.

Ruter is collaborating with Fornebubanen and Sporveien to minimize disruptions and provide clear, timely information to commuters. Details on alternative services will be available through the Ruter app and website.

Impact on Commuters

With substitute buses planned for affected routes, Ruter aims to reduce inconvenience for passengers. However, they advise riders to plan for potential delays and changes to their usual routes.

“This will be a challenging year for our metro users, but these improvements are critical to the future of Oslo’s public transport,” added Lægran.

For detailed updates, commuters can visit Ruter’s official website or consult the mobile app closer to the date of each planned disruption.
