If you're looking to explore the historic city of Bergen and the stunning fjord village of Flåm, the journey between the two will become an unforgettable part of your trip too.

Despite the relatively short distance between them, the journey offers breathtaking views of Norway's dramatic landscape.

Introducing Flåm and Bergen

Flåm is renowned for its majestic fjords, scenic railway, and beautiful hiking trails. It's a place I never tire of visiting, summer or winter.

Bergen, on the other hand, is Norway's second-largest city, with a vibrant cultural scene and historic Bryggen wharf. Yet Bergen isn't all about city life. It also offers natural beauty in abundance.

As you can see from the map below, Bergen is on the west coast while Flåm is much farther inland. It's located at the end of the beautiful Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord.

Now you know where they are, here are the best ways to travel between these two iconic destinations.

Train Travel from Bergen to Flåm

For many travellers, the most famous and scenic option is by train. That's because the trip combines two of the world's most beautiful train journeys: the Bergen Railway and the Flåm Railway.

You’ll first take the Bergen Railway from Bergen to Myrdal, a mountain station situated at 866 metres (2,841 feet) above sea level.

From Myrdal, you transfer to the famous Flåm Railway, which takes you on a 20-kilometre (12.4-mile) descent down the valley. As primarily a tourist service, the Flåm Railway includes scenic commentary and a photo stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall.

The entire journey can take around five hours, depending on connections, and offers some of Norway’s most stunning vistas, including waterfalls, valleys, and snow-capped mountains.

Short connections at Myrdal are absolutely fine as the platforms are right next to each other. In fact, they are preferred, as there is very little to do in Myrdal unless you're heading off on a hike.

Booking tickets in advance is a must, especially during the summer when entire carriages are often reserved for cruise ship guests. For tickets, use En Tur, the centralised ticketing platform for Norwegian public transport.

Driving from Bergen to Flåm

If you prefer to travel at your own pace, driving from Bergen to Flåm is another excellent option. The journey covers about 166 kilometres (103 miles) and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours without stops.

This scenic route along the E16 highway provides numerous opportunities to explore more of Norway’s natural beauty.

Along the way, you’ll pass fjords, valleys, and the impressive Gudvangen fjord village, where a stop is highly recommended. It's here you'll find the Viking Valley, a popular summer attraction.

Of course, you don't have to drive directly there. There are many options to take scenic detours and enjoy some of Norway's mountains and fjords from a different perspective.

Just keep in mind that Norway’s mountainous roads can be narrow and winding, and there may be road tolls along the way especially in Bergen. It’s also a good idea to check weather and road conditions before setting out.

Don't have a car? Car rental is available in Bergen and from Bergen Airport. One-way rentals are expensive, but this is a good value option if you plan to return to Bergen following your trip to Flåm, and wherever else you include on your itinerary.

Ferry from Bergen to Flåm

For a more relaxed journey, you can travel by ferry between Bergen and Flåm, offering a chance to see the fjords from a unique perspective. The Norled express boat service is a popular choice.

The ferry departs from Bergen’s harbour and sails along the Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord. This journey takes approximately five and a half hours and provides an unforgettable experience, especially on a clear day.

You’ll glide through dramatic fjord scenery with towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque villages dotting the shores.

Just keep in mind that this service operates between April and October only. It is also a passenger boat, and no vehicles can be carried.

Bus Travel from Bergen to Flåm

Another cost-effective way to travel between Bergen and Flåm is by bus. Both Vy Express and Nor-Way Bussekspress operate buses between the two locations.

The bus journey takes about 3-4 hours and follows a similar route to driving, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular scenery along the way.

Buses are comfortable and offer a good alternative for travellers who prefer not to drive or are looking for a more budget-friendly option. Departure times can vary, so be sure to check the schedules well in advance.

Booking in advance is highly recommended, both to ensure your seat on your preferred departure and to get a preferential rate.

Organised Tours from Bergen to Flåm

If you're looking for a hassle-free way to experience this beautiful part of Norway, consider joining an organized tour.

Several tour operators offer day trips or multi-day excursions from Bergen to Flåm, combining different modes of transport such as trains, buses, and boats.

One popular option is the Norway in a Nutshell tour, which includes the Bergen Railway, Flåm Railway, and a fjord cruise. This tour is ideal for travellers short on time who want to make the most of their visit to Norway’s fjords.

It's not a guided tour, but rather a package deal which gives you access to the various forms of transport you'll need without having to deal with a multitude of separate bookings.

Which is the Best Option?

The best way to travel from Bergen to Flåm depends on your travel style and preferences.

If you're looking for a scenic, leisurely trip, the ferry is a fantastic option. For the most dramatic views, the train journey via Myrdal is hard to beat. If you’re short on time or prefer flexibility, driving or taking the bus could be the way to go.

One last recommendation from me. Consider staying at least one night in Flåm. By doing this, you can enjoy the village while it's at its most peaceful. Day trippers and especially cruise ships can make Flåm a very busy place during daytime hours.

An overnight stay also allows you to take the quieter early or late departures of sightseeing tours and the Flåm Railway.

Whichever mode of travel you choose, the journey from Bergen to Flåm is sure to be one of the highlights of your time in Norway. Enjoy your trip!
